Özet
The phenomenon of violence has existed throughout human history. Humanity has sought to achieve a social order free from violence through religion, law and politics. Paradoxically, however, violence has gained legitimacy through these three institutions. Today, the relationship between humans and violence continues to maintain a similar paradoxical structure. In this respect, violence is also an important subject of interest and research in social theory. This study examines how the phenomenon of violence is understood and interpreted from René Girard's perspective. The aim of the study is to question the possibility of an interdisciplinary interpretation of the phenomenon of violence. A qualitative method has been adopted in the article. To this end, a literature review on the subject was first conducted. Secondly, René Girard's works were analysed, and the concepts he developed regarding religion, violence, and the sacred were identified and analysed. Finally, a comparative analysis and critique of René Girard's concepts was conducted. The study concluded that, despite developing a comprehensive theory on the phenomenon of violence, René Girard adopted a reductionist approach. Furthermore, he disregarded power relations as a source of violence.
